What is a Root Canal Treatment?

The Root Canal Procedure Explained

Tooth decay is a common problem and there are many people in America belonging to different age groups who are suffering from untreated tooth decay. Here is what happens in the procedure;

First our specialist endodontist will administer a jelly like substance to numb your gums. After the dentist sees that your gums have been numbed he will then proceed to use a local anesthetic by injecting it in your mouth. This will numb your entire mouth, including your tongue and skin surrounding the area. We also administer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to numb the pain and ease your anxiety.

The dentist will then proceed to separate your bad tooth from the rest of your teeth using a small rubber sheet with a metal frame. This safe rubber sheet stops the liquids and tooth chips from going inside your mouth and into your throat.

Afterwards, the dentist will use a drill and other dental tools to remove the infected pulp from the tooth, leaving an empty cavity. The cavity will be filled using medicines below the gums so that the risk of infection drops to zero. The dentist will also fill the cavity with filling materials that are temporary and then a final filing for the root canal.

After this process, sometimes a crown (dental cap) is fixed over the root canal or a permanent filling is used. If the dentist decides to use a crown he will fabricate an exact impression of your tooth which he will give to our technician. The technician is going to use the impression to create an artificial tooth exactly matching your original.

After the tooth is set, a crow will be fixed into place temporarily till the permanent one is created and cemented over your tooth.

What Should I Expect After the Procedure?

When the root canal procedure is over with, you will not be able to feel your gums and lips for a couple of hours due to the anesthetic. Once that wears off, you may or may not  feel a throbbing pain in your root canal and gums which can be controlled using proper pain killing drugs.
